Your home for advanced orthodontic care: When Invisalign® may be an appropriate treatment
Throughout this website, you will see how the office of Dr. Al A. Fallah stands apart with training and experience in neuromuscular orthodontics and related approaches to diagnose and correct bite imbalances. At our practice in Carlsbad, California, treating malocclusion and straightening the teeth and jaws goes far beyond conventional braces. Among many other capabilities and therapies, Invisalign® can present both a primary option and a treatment secondary to interventions like the DNA Appliance® system.
In fact, Invisalign® may be a follow-up to therapy with the above Daytime Nighttime Appliance®. This approach can be appropriate for patients who require greater expansion of the maxilla (upper jaw). By opening up the maxilla more, these patients finally get real and lasting relief from the effects of sleep-disordered breathing, such as obstructive sleep apnea and temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMJD).
More on Invisalign®
Invisalign®, too, involves the use of special oral appliances. These appliances are customized to fit each patient’s mouth. Known as aligner trays or aligners, they slip into the mouth and over the teeth. When worn as directed each day (only removed before eating, brushing, and flossing), the appliances place gentle yet consistent force on the teeth. This is similar to the basic principle behind the effectiveness of traditional orthodontic treatment with braces. Instead of using removable aligners to place pressure on the teeth, braces involve using a system of fixed (non-removable) brackets, wires, and bands to generate the force that facilitates tooth movement.

With proper patient compliance, the Invisalign® aligners gradually move the teeth. It is important to not only wear the aligners as directed by Dr. Fallah each day but also to wear each aligner in the correct order. At the start of treatment, you will be given a series of aligners. These aligners may look similar, but each is slightly different. The aligners are marked. So you know the correct sequence or order to wear each tray. The various trays are designed to coincide with different phases of treatment. Generally, each tray is worn for around one to two weeks before moving on to the next one in the series.
Invisalign® can be an appropriate and effective treatment for the right person or when combined with additional interventions as needed. Patients largely appreciate the comfort and ease of the process. After all, the aligners may be removed before meals and for brushing and flossing. Since the aligners are made from a clear plastic, they are not obvious in your smile. It is an advanced, biocompatible plastic suitable for many different types of patients, including those with concerns or sensitivities to other materials such as metals. The thermoplastic is also smooth and designed to flex for added comfort throughout the day.
