What are the benefits of an expert in TMJ treatment for people living in the San Diego area?
Sometimes a person doesn’t realize that headaches, muscle tension, fatigue, and neck pain can all be signs of a TMJ disorder. The cause can vary and only a professional can make a positive diagnosis. Many suffer, but not all seek relief that comes with correction of the condition. People living or working in the San Diego area have access to a dental expert in TMJ treatment who is experienced in these problems, Dr. Al A. Fallah, in Carlsbad. With careful evaluation and effective treatment, our goal is to restore balance for our patients and help to restore their quality of life.
WHAT IS THE TEMPOROMANDIBULAR JOINT (TMJ)?
The temporomandibular joints or TMJs for short connect the mandible, or lower jaw, to the temporal bone. These joints, located on both sides of a person’s face are flexible, with the ability to move side to side, forward and backward, as well as up and down. They provide the motions necessary to be able to do such things as talk, bite, chew, and yawn. There are muscles that aid in the motion and position of the joint. This is a very complex joint in the body, and proper function is essential to patient comfort, but also can be very complicated to diagnose and treat.
WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF TMJ DISORDERS?
Pain and complications from TMJ disorders may present due to various factors. A disc can become worn or move out of proper position. Arthritis can damage cartilage in the joint. Problems may also stem from an injury. Sometimes there is no positive identification of the exact cause.
