For many good reasons, holistic dentists like Dr. Al A. Fallah often incorporate ozone therapy into their practices. For starters, it is considered a natural healer. It has been used for more than a century in medical applications. Moreover, it really works! Dentistry for San Diego is excited to guide you through some of the numerous uses for ozone at our office in Carlsbad, California, by answering some of your questions about this addition to many treatments.
What is ozone exactly?
In this context, it is a powerful antimicrobial agent. Characterized as an "energized" form of oxygen, it may be applied to precisely, conservatively, quickly, and safely repair damaged tissues. It is an extremely powerful tool for preventing root canals. For oral surgical procedures, it helps clean bony and soft tissue infections. When used properly, ozone effectively destroys the pathogens responsible for diseases in the mouth. It also increases circulation at the treatment sites, activates a healthy immune response, and encourages healthy metabolism of oxygen.
How do you administer ozone?
There are many methods to introduce ozone to the tissues that need it the most. At Dentistry for San Diego, Dr. Fallah applies ozone as either a gas or a liquid to complement and unlock the body's natural disease-fighting and healing capabilities.
Can ozone be used alone, or is it an "adjunct" to other procedures?
Both! Ozone is incredibly versatile as a holistic, biocompatible therapeutic option. We may apply it to heal cold sores and canker sores, ease painful tooth sensitivity, improve symptoms of temporomandibular joint dysfunction or disorders (TMJDs), and treat odontogenic sinus infections. It may also be incorporated into other procedures.
How do you use ozone with other services or treatments?
Ozone has applications for preventative, general, and restorative dentistry. We have had great success in using ozone to support optimal outcomes, healing, and a comfortable experience at every step in the process of:
- Undergoing biological oral surgery
- Repairing cavities with fillings
- Receiving dental restorations (ozone can be used during preparation)
- Treating inflamed or infected gums
- Rebuilding teeth with zirconia dental implants
- Treating infections and associated pain to restore and preserve natural teeth
- Regenerating deteriorated soft and hard tissues
- Disinfecting the mouth during routine professional hygiene appointments
- And much, much more
What are the benefits of ozone therapy?
In addition to some of the favorable characteristics of ozone mentioned throughout this article, we emphasize that ozone is truly compatible with biological tissues. It occurs naturally and functions to fight the pathogens responsible for disease. Additionally, it is safe and appropriate for all ages. It presents a painless and non-toxic therapy, which is also well-suited to individuals with a history of allergies and sensitivities.
Holistic dentists like Dr. Fallah are also doing their part to fight the overuse of antibiotic therapy. Ozone is an alternative to the excessive use of antibiotics, which has resulted in resistant strains like MRSA, a serious public health threat. Our patients who are nervous or apprehensive about dental treatments appreciate how easy and painless the whole process is with ozone. We are helping to re-establish a healthy relationship with and perceptions of modern dental care.
Why should I choose Dentistry for San Diego?

Preventing Root Canals with Ozone Therapy
Transcript
Hi, my name is Dr. Fallah, and I'm a holistic dentist in Carlsbad, California. What I want to talk about is the use of ozone in preventing root canals for patients who have very, very deep cavities. These are cavities that, typically, when you go to a non-holistic dentist who does not use ozone, they will tell you that you need a root canal. But when we do the vitality test, the tooth is still vital—the tooth has blood flow, and there's no sign of infection yet in the CT scan. Once we use ozone in those very deep cavities, get rid of all the bacteria, and place the filling or crown on the tooth to seal it, the tooth actually does just fine, with no need for a root canal. We've done thousands of these cases, and I'm very proud of them.
How Ozone Therapy Helps Prevent Root Canals
Transcript
My name is Dr. Fallah. I'm a holistic dentist in Carlsbad, California, and I want to talk about ozone treatment to prevent root canals when treating cavities. It's a huge benefit for each and every patient to use ozone for these cavities. When a cavity is close to the nerve of the tooth, ozone kills all the microbes very effectively and desensitizes the pulp and the nerve. Then we can place the composite filling, the crown, or whatever the tooth needs, seal the tooth really beautifully, and prevent future infection, root canals, and extractions. That's the beauty of ozone.
