It is not unusual for patients to travel two-plus hours out of their way to benefit from the expertise of Dr. Al A. Fallah near San Diego. After all, the drive to our office in Carlsbad, California, is well worth it when they finally get relief from years of chronic pain and other TMJ symptoms.
What exactly are TMJ symptoms?
TMJ refers to the Temporomandibular Joints on either side of the face. These jaw joints support the movements that are needed to open and close the mouth and to otherwise perform basic functions. Headache, radiating facial pain, and other functional problems can arise when these joints and their intricate system of interconnected tissues and structures are “disordered,” or not performing in a natural and healthy manner.
What causes the TMJs to become “disordered”?
TMJ Dysfunction or Disorders (TMJDs) have numerous potential roots. They may be caused by trauma or injury, arthritis and other degenerative conditions, tumors, and even certain behaviors and habits. Basically, any time these joints and the complex system of bones, muscles, ligaments, and tissues become “stressed,” you can end up with persistent and increasingly uncomfortable symptoms and mobility or functional challenges.
How do the jaw joints cause pain in other areas of the face?
Headaches and other forms of referred pain can arise due to inflammation. The inflamed joints and tissues may place pressure on neighboring nerves, structures, and areas. The muscle tension associated with TMJDs can also produce referred pain in the temples, forehead, and at the back of the head. Additionally, associated misalignment of the jaw and bite may lead to further tension that radiates to the head. Poorly managed stress, anxiety, and conditions like bruxism (chronic teeth grinding) also exacerbate tension and strain on the muscles and tissues, which can manifest as headaches.
How do you treat headaches and other TMJD symptoms?
Dr. Fallah has considerable training, experience, and technologies to support advanced and appropriate treatment of neuromuscular and dental conditions. There are many different potential sources of disordered TMJs and related tension. Likewise, there are numerous therapies that are designed and tailored to address the root cause of each patient’s symptoms. Dr. Fallah will complete a full evaluation to assess your bite position and other factors.
By correcting your bite through an array of orthotic and orthodontic appliances, he can ease the stress, pressure, and resulting tension that is placed on the joints, muscles, and other tissues. In turn, patients finally experience a reduction in the frequency and/or severity of their symptoms. Other interventions may include restorative dental care with new or repaired crowns and dentures or recontouring of the teeth —a conservative yet potentially effective way to achieve a balanced and healthy bite.
