What is SMART?
SMART stands for Safe Mercury Amalgam Removal Technique. It was developed by the IAOMT, a worldwide organization committed to researching and advancing the use of truly biocompatible materials. SMART is setting the standard for removing amalgam, silver-colored metal dental fillings. These fillings contain more mercury than any other metal by weight. Patients, dentists, and staff may be exposed to mercury unnecessarily and excessively while removing these toxic fillings.
Improper removal and disposal of mercury waste can also threaten the health of our communities and environment by polluting our waterways. SMART standards and recommendations are based on sound and up-to-date scientific research. These rigorous recommendations significantly reduce unnecessary and excessive mercury exposure.
How do dental offices become certified in SMART?
To achieve this designation, dentists must complete special and comprehensive training related to mercury safety and the implementation of protocol recommendations. To support a SMART office, certified dentists must also invest in the products, equipment, and other resources to incorporate this technique into daily practice. Our SMART certification validates that we have the necessary tools and training to provide the safest treatment and to support the health of our patients, people, and planet.
How do you remove mercury amalgam fillings with SMART?
We are happy to guide you through some of the steps! The process begins with ensuring that everyone in the treatment room is properly protected. This includes wearing face shields, hair coverings, gowns, and other protective garments. These measures are essential to prevent mercury exposure from the significant amounts of particles generated during the procedure.
To minimize the release of mercury vapor, we use a technique known as “chunking.” Traditional drilling methods tend to increase the amount of mercury released into the air. By cutting the filling into larger sections or “chunks,” we can reduce the amount of drilling required, reducing mercury exposure.
Additionally, we keep the filling as cool as possible during drilling to minimize exposure to particles and vapor. Using powerful equipment, such as our high-volume evacuator or suction system, is also crucial in preventing the release of vapor and particles into the environment.
How do you get rid of mercury waste?
We take mercury amalgam disposal seriously; no SMART-certified office would think otherwise. What we do after the removal of your filling is essential. After removing amalgam, we thoroughly rinse your mouth to ensure no traces of mercury are left behind. We also safely remove and dispose of any protective coverings used during the process. Equipment and dental instruments are thoroughly cleaned, and other disposable items are safely recycled.
