What Are The Benefits Of Ozone Therapy As Treatment In Dentistry For Carlsbad, Ca Patients?
Patients in and around the Carlsbad, CA area who are interested in holistic dentistry are welcome to visit Dr. Al A. Fallah and his team of professionals. His practice is equipped with the latest technology to ensure quality dental care. He also offers ozone therapy as a treatment in dentistry.
WHAT IS OZONE THERAPY?
Ozone therapy integrates ozone gas into various procedures. While it has been used for a variety of treatments in medicine, it can also be used in dentistry. Ozone therapy in dentistry focuses on the antimicrobial effect of ozone gas when used in the oral cavity. It can be administered in several applications but is used in our practice in its gas form.
Dr. Fallah may recommend integrating the use of ozone therapy in the following types of treatments:
Cavities
When patients have cavities close to the nerve which aren’t treated with ozone therapy, there is a very high incidence of nerve damage that typically results in root canal therapy or tooth extraction. To help avoid this outcome, Dr. Fallah uses continuous ozone flow on these deep cavities, killing all bacteria in the proximity of the pulp. After eradicating the tooth decay,he then completely seals that area with a composite bonding technique, followed by the placement of an inlay, onlay, crown, or filling. This is a very advantageous technique that has enabled us to avoid countless root canals and extractions. For this technique to be most effective, Dr. Fallah evaluates the decayed tooth for the following criteria:
- The infection has not reached the bone.
- The pulp inflammation is reversible.
- The pulp is not infected or necrotic.
In summary, ozone therapy successfully can preserve healthy pulp and avoids root canals or extractions in cases of deep decay.
Oral Surgery
When we extract an infected tooth, it is typically accompanied by a great deal of infected tissue in the nearby bone and gums. When this occurs, we use numerous different techniques to completely eliminate the infection. One of the most powerful tools we use is continuous ozone flow on the jawbone and gum tissue next to the infected tooth. The flow of ozone kills all the microbes in the area. Then we use a curette, and an ultrasonic surgical device called a piezo to completely clean and remove any remaining necrotic or damaged tissue in the extraction site.
We also use ozone in the placement of zirconia dental implants. Right before the implant is inserted, we place ozone in the socket, which enables us to create a very clean, sanitary environment for implant placement.
Other uses
- Inflamed teeth: Sometimes, an infected or inflamed tooth will be close to the point of pulp death, resulting in the need for a root canal or extraction. To help avoid this, we can inject ozone right next to the tooth root, which has a reasonably good success rate in promoting healing.
- TMJ pain: Ozone injections in the temporomandibular joints can provide relief for patients suffering from TMJ pain.
- Periodontal treatment: While we have found that laser therapy is more beneficial for gum disease, ozone therapy may also be recommended during your periodontal treatment.
