What is holistic dentistry all about?
Simply put, holistic dentistry is about improving quality of life. It is a prevention-focused approach, with treatment techniques that consider much more than just fixing teeth. Holistic dentistry takes into account the overall impact of every procedure and material on the entire patient:
Whole-body wellness that is impacted from your teeth, gums, jaw bones, bite, etc
As a holistic dentist, Dr. Fallah sees his role as multi-faceted. His primary responsibility is to educate patients, so they understand what is happening in their mouths, and how it affects their health and lives. He, of course, helps patients avoid common oral issues such as tooth decay and gum disease. When problems do occur, they are treated with techniques and materials that restore appearance and function, in a gentle manner that also promotes wellness, aids in overcoming dental anxiety, and is cost-effective in the long-term. Biocompatibility testing furthers those goals.
Treatment in Dr. Fallah’s care is quite personalized, progressing at a pace the patient finds comfortable. Dr. Fallah explains options and benefits, and treatment planning is a collaborative process. If the patient chooses to include biocompatibility testing, it is only after gaining an understanding of its purpose.
Any component (whether made of synthetic or natural elements) that is artificially placed into the mouth has the potential to affect oral tissues, and the body systemically. Most dental patients do not realize that the dentist has a broad range of material options at his or her disposal, ranging from mercury-laden amalgam fillings to BPA-free composite resins and many types of porcelain, restoration cements, bonding agents, etc. Biocompatibility testing is a scientific laboratory process that assesses which available dental materials are most likely to be readily accepted by your body, with minimal risk of an adverse reaction.
A small sample of your blood is drawn and shipped under controlled conditions to a trusted testing lab. Results are returned in about two weeks. Dr. Fallah receives a list of your body’s reactivity to a variety of chemicals associated with common dental materials – about 2,000 of them. He can then select materials and techniques to complete treatment with greatly reduced risk of collateral problems throughout the body. (Biocompatibility cannot be 100 percent guaranteed, since your body chemistry is continually changing.)
Biocompatible holistic dentistry benefits Carlsbad, CA patients
Since the 1800s, patients have had little choice in restoration materials placed in their mouths. So, why is biocompatibility testing important now? Aren’t dental products approved by the FDA?
The answer lies primarily in the fact that each body is different. Exposure to any artificial substance places some level of load on the human body. Each person’s ability to manage that load is unique. Imagine, for example a large man who has consumed alcoholic beverages every day for many years. He can probably function relatively normally after downing several shots of straight hard liquor. Yet the same amount of alcohol could be toxic to a young, small, or unseasoned drinker, or to a person with liver disease. Biocompatibility testing evaluates your individual reaction to materials before anything is placed into your mouth.
Humans have changed, too, in response to our environment. Our systems have become sensitized to pollutants, pesticides, chemical additives in food, new strains of viruses, and many other factors outside of our control. These sensitivities can wreak havoc with the immune system in contact with incompatible dental materials.
