About the IAOMT

Representing a network of dental, medical, and research professionals with members in North America and affiliated chapters in over fourteen other countries, the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology (IAOMT) has been researching the damage dental mercury inflicts on the environment and humans since the non-profit organization was created in 1984.

Millions of dentists around the world routinely use dental amalgam as a filling material to repair decayed teeth. Often referred to as "silver" fillings, amalgam fillings actually consist of 45-55% metallic mercury.

According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), there are currently over 1,000 tons of mercury in the mouths of Americans, which is more than half of all the mercury being used in the U.S. today. Also according to the EPA, dentistry accounts for 14% of the U.S. domestic usage of mercury annually.

What is Biological Dentistry?
The impact of toxic materials and its relationship to denntal and physiological health is recognized by Biological dentists.

How is Mercury Used in Dentistry?
People often do not realize the "silver" amalgam used to fill teeth are 50% mercury. When at room temperature, mercury vaporizes easily and once varporized, is odorless, colorless and tasteless. Inhaled mercury vapor is readily absorbed into the bloodstream and mercurity is a powerful poison. The World Health Organization concluded that dental fillings contribute more mercury to a person's body than all other sources of mercury combined. Published research demonstrates that mercury is more toxic than lead, cadmium or arsenic. No amount of exposure to mercury vapor can be considered harmless. Especially considering its cumulative effect.

Are there health risks?
Mercury, unfortunately, is the most toxic, non-radioactive element on the earth. Most medical and scientific researchers have called for a ban on the use of mercury in all products. However, the potential harmful effects of mercury fillings have been ignored by the U.S. Government. Due to its poisonous nature, mercury can adversely affect the immune, urinary, cardiac, respiratory and digestive systems. Under laboratory conditions, mercury has produced brain cell deterioration identical to that seen in victims of Alzheimer's disease.
