Mercury Amalgam Tooth Fillings: FDA Changes Stance
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) seems to have changed their stance on dental amalgam fillings. In a legal settlement signed recently, the FDA has changed the information on its Web site about amalgam fillings to say that they “may have neurotoxic effects on the nervous systems of developing children and fetus” and that pregnant women “should not avoid seeking dental care, but should discuss options with their health practitioner.” Till now they were not so harsh on the neurotoxic effects of mercury fillings.

For cases where a single process is not enough to achieve the desired results, Dr. Fallah offers the Extreme Makeover - a combination of treatments and techniques that work together to rejuvenate your smile.
Dr. Fallah works closely with each and every patient to determine the best course of treatment for achieving the specific results that they desire. He then uses his expertise and experience to perform a complete makeover that results in beautiful, natural looking teeth.
Porcelain Veneers
If your makeover requires straightening or reshaping your teeth, Dr. Fallah may use porcelain veneers - thin layers of strong porcelain bonded directly to your existing healthy enamel. This can be used to correct:
- Chips and cracks
- Wear
- Discoloration and staining
- Gaps and spaces
Veneers can be put in place in as few as two visits. They are very resistant to damage and discoloration and can be a key element in your complete smile makeover.
Porcelain Crowns
By bonding porcelain crowns directly to existing healthy enamel, Dr. Fallah can repair broken down teeth and restore their natural strength and beauty.
Advancements in the materials used in porcelain crowns have made this procedure easier and more comfortable than ever before. No longer is it necessary for patients to undergo the stress of a root canal or the complete grinding down of their existing tooth.
Instead, porcelain crowns can now be adhered directly to the healthy part of your existing tooth, making your extreme makeover easier and more comfortable.
Dental Implants
If your makeover requires the replacement of missing teeth, Dr. Fallah may recommend the use of dental implants. Implants consist of titanium posts surgically inserted into the jaw and topped with a sturdy, natural-looking porcelain crown.
In addition to giving you a great looking smile, dental implants have practical benefits, including:
- Improved ability to chew food
- Elimination of bone deterioration in the mouth
Dental implants also have numerous advantages over the use of dentures, such as:
- Greater ability to maintain the structure of the face
- More comfort and security
- Reduction of bad breath or other socially awkward conditions sometimes caused by dentures
The procedure for installing dental implants can be completed as an outpatient surgery using either a local anesthetic alone or with conscious sedation. This is an optimal way to make a big difference for your smile, and restoring dental function when you are missing teeth.
Gum contouring
Proportional, healthy-looking gums can be the key to a beautiful smile. Using a variety of techniques, Dr. Fallah can contour your gums to increase beauty and proportionality to your smile.
Bite Correction
Having a properly aligned bite makes a big difference to how your mouth looks and feels. Using precise measurements and various techniques for re-shaping and realigning your teeth, Dr. Fallah can effectively correct your bite for maximum function, aesthetics and health.
Your treatment begins with sophisticated measurement procedures which determine the bite pattern that will produce the best results. The corrected bite can then be tested using an orthotic to ensure that it will achieve the best possible outcome.
Once your optimal bite pattern has been determined, several treatment options may be undertaken to make the correction permanent, including:
- Reshaping the teeth
- The use of an occlusal bite splint, or Orthotic - a removable or bonded appliance worn by the patient that protects teeth from damage caused by clenching or grinding
Correcting your bite can have great results for the beauty of your smile, and it can have practical benefits as well. Patients who have undergone this treatment with Dr. Fallah have even experienced relief from:
- Neck and jaw pain
- Headaches
- Symptoms of TMJ
Using all of these techniques, Dr. Fallah can return your teeth to their healthy, natural beauty. Call for a consultation to see how an Extreme Makeover from Dr. Fallah can rejuvenate your smile.
