TMJ
TMJ disorders are a group of complex problems of the jaw joint. TMJ disorders are also sometimes referred to as myofacial pain dysfunction and Costen's syndrome. Because muscles and joints work together in the jaw, a problem with either can lead to stiffness, bite problems, headaches, clicking sounds, ear pain, or locked jaws.
Treating TMJ
Resting the Jaw:
Keeping the teeth apart as much as possible can be beneficial. If tooth grinding is occurring, methods need to be devised to cause this activity to cease. Avoid chewing gum or eating chewy, crunchy, or hard foods such as raw vegetables, candy, or nuts. Opening the mouth widely to eat foods such as extra-thick sandwiches or bulky hamburgers, is also not recommended.
Hot and Cold Therapy:
Heat and ice help in reducing muscle tension and spasms. However, immediately after an injury to the TMJ, treatment with ice packs is best. Cold packs can be helpful for relieving pain and reducing inflammation.
Physical Therapy:
Read all about the TMJ electrical stimulation, provided by Dr. Fallah, which helps decrease pain and increase the range of motion and strength of the joint.
Stress Management:
Stress support groups and counseling also assist in reducing muscle tension. Biofeedback can help people learn to identify instances of increased muscle activity and spasms.
Occlusal Therapy:
Custom-made acrylic appliances that fit over the teeth are commonly prescribed for night but may be required throughout the day. They balance the bite and reduce or eliminate teeth grinding or clenching (bruxism).
Correction of Bite Abnormality:
Corrective dental therapy, such as neuromuscular orthodontics, may be required to correct abnormal bites. Dental restorations assist in creating a more stable bite. Precise adjustment of teeth, bridges and crowns ensure proper alignment of the teeth. Our aesthetic and TMJ dentistry can bring life-changing results by restoring your smile, alleviating pain and increasing your self-confidence.
